About

this is just an outlet for my thoughts on songs and things. I try to update often, and usually fail.

Patrick Wolf - “Magpie”

I think this song has two parts. The first is Patrick alone, talking about hope being lost when his wedding ring was stolen and wandering around alone. The second is the mysterious voice that tells him to sing, and that he will find a home. This song, from his album The Magic Position, is part of a sudden deep melancholy only present in the middle of the album, in between the happier love songs and strength songs.  In between the happiness, there had to be that balance of hopelessness and sadness. It’s almost as if the album has mood swings like a misunderstood teen. And so mysterious - what the hell is this all about, anyway? The Scary Woman Voice nearly forces him to sing with her, and the sense of hopelessness never disappears, especially not when the last line is “Seven for a secret, never to be told.”

Despite its natural slowness, it apparently still got stuck in my head enough to affect my Spanish doodles.
